The data are sourced from the SLF (Swiss Avalanche Research Institute) measuring stations, and from its Cervinia counterpart. Latest update: It has been snowing all weekend, down to village level for the first time this season. Substantial amounts of fresh snow have fallen on both the Zermatt and Cervinia side, the biggest quantity is at Plan Maison with 35cm.

The still above is from the Gornergrat train station webcam taken on November 6th, at 3,100m altitude. You can clearly see the pyramid of the Klein Matterhorn peeking from the background as the clouds lift.

We had 15cm of fresh snow on the top slopes yesterday, giving lovely conditions on the runs. The webcam image below is from Klein Matterhorn. You can see the East face of the Matterhorn, the run toward Trockener Steg, and the Furggsattel Chair in the distance.

Due to the recent snowfall, the available ski area has been extended and already there are 12 runs open giving a total of 29km and 1,000m of vertical. The winter season will start on October 29th which is also when the link to Cervinia opens.

30cm of fresh powder fell on Tuesday on the higher slopes, giving two days of epic powder runs. The snow below 2,500m is wonderful spring corn. All lifts on the Matterhorn side and in Cervinia are open until May 1st.

Snow depth is 20% above the long-term average: Top 250cm, Middle 172cm, Village 65cm. We had snowfalls totalling 76cm giving outstanding off-piste conditions and superb on-piste. Temperatures are still wintery which means the snow is staying fresh.The photos below were taken on March 12th, one week after the last snowfall. This is the miracle of Zermatt. Conditions are very good with grippy wintery powdery snow everywhere. The steep yellow (a.k.a. black) runs are opening, and there is still some lovely powder to be found off-piste as you can see from the photo below of the Gourmet Ski Guide's wife Belinda tracking fresh powder on Rothorn on Monday.

The new snow has settled and been perfectly groomed, giving outstanding piste skiing conditions – although not much off piste I'm afraid. 255km of runs are open and all five sectors are interlinked: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Matterhorn, Cervinia and Valtournenche.

It has been snowing almost continuously for the last 7 days with a total of 160cm of fresh snow on the mountain. This is now giving us a snow base of 50cm in the village and 290cm at the top (Plateau Rosa). This quantity is in line with the long-term average for this time of year. The skiing will be oustanding as soon as the run grooming is finished. Time for a short break / long weekend?
