We believe that this is the most comprehensive and accurate snow report for Zermatt that there is. The data are sourced from the SLF (Swiss Avalanche Research Institute) measuring stations, and from its Cervinia counterpart. The current snow conditions are below, you can also click on the relevant years to see the what your chosen week was like in the past. And you can download our fully detailed spreadsheet of this season’s snowfall and depths.
40 cm of fresh snow over the last 3 days are giving us excellent off-piste deep powder conditions, as you can see from the shots below and from these videos. The pistes also are uniformely glorious!
It was a glorious Sunday last Sunday – although the Gornergrat snow measuring station reported 30cm of fresh snow, we found a bottomless 45cm of new snow on Triftji, which had just opened. Conditions are excellent, with soft snow up top, although the lower runs are quite hard now due to the colder weather. On the other hand, this is keeping the snow in great shape.
The Gourmet Ski Guide and friends last Sunday near the White Hare run:
We had a good snowfall of 20cm on Sunday January 4th, giving us 3 days of great powder skiing. This week is gloriously sunny, the slopes empty now that the crowds have gone, and the skiing is extensive, relaxed and beautiful. It's a good time to come.
A Mountain Exposure guest under Hohtalli on January 5th:
The Gornergrat train snow clearing engine on January 4th:
Fresh snowfall of 10cm on the upper slopes, and 253km of runs are open, more than anywhere else in the Alps. Cumulated snowfall so far this season is 226cm at 2,900m which is mid station in Zermatt, given that the top lift is at 3,880m. We have a lot of natural snow above 2,000m, and with extensive snowmaking further down, all resort runs will be open for the New Year week. The skiing conditions are very good.
Just a light sprinkling of snow since last week, but much colder temperatures have preserved the fresh snow for your enjoyment, as you can see in the photo below taken on Sunday. In addition to good off-piste, there are 81 runs open across the whole area.
Steep and deep under the Plateau Rosa in Zermatt on December 7th:
We have had a fresh snowfall of 20cm on the upper pistes. All five ski areas (Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Matterhorn, Cervinia and Valtournenche) are open and linked. Given the warm temperatures over the last week, there is no longer snow in the village, however the upper slopes have above average snow depth (210cm at the top) and the skiing conditions are superb, with 185km of open runs, 1,800m of vertical and powdery winter snow, Zermatt continues to offer the best skiing currently in the Alps.
Here is a shot taken off the side of the Trockener Steg to Furgg run on December 2nd:
45cm of fresh snow at the top, 24cm in the village! 200cm of snow has fallen so far this season, so conditions are assured to be outstanding for Christmas skiing.
So much snow has fallen (90cm at the top, with a snow base of 130cm)) that the link to Italy is now open and you can ski all the way down to Plan Maison. The wonderful Ventina run is also open down to the cable car at Cime Bianche. And more snow is forecast for next week – it's a great start to the season.
It is currently snowing very hard and will continue to do so until tomorrow. As has been the case over the last few years, these autumnal snowfalls come from the south and Zermatt is in the blessed position of getting the lion's share. We already have 80cm of fresh snow at the Plateau Rosa (where the skiing is open) and 40cm at Gornergrat. We will update you with the final amounts as soon as the snowstorm passes. It's very exciting!
